An established street with mature trees and houses that have been there a long time. Building new on a lot like this is less about making a statement than about not making one. The house had to feel like it belonged there the day it was finished.
We kept the massing broken up so the house reads at the scale of its neighbors from the street, then let it open up at the back where nobody is looking. Materials are restrained on the front elevation and more relaxed on the private side. The trees stayed, which shaped the footprint more than anything else on the project.
Inside, the plan is straightforward and the detailing is where the money went. Trim, stair, cabinetry, and the transitions between materials all got drawn rather than specified.
